Part 2: Peace With Yourself · Lesson 10 of 38

Thinly Sliced Life, Part 3

Once again, we move forward in time. This time, we’re looking for a moment in your past which caused some pain and regret. Ideally, it’s a moment that’s a while ago, but it’s also something that still makes you cringe when you think about it now. So perhaps from your teenage years or from early adulthood.

The important thing is that the moment still has an emotional charge.

Then, the exercise is to search through previous moments of your life that explain why you acted the way you did, why you didn’t know any better.

Once you see your regretful behavior in this context, forgiveness comes easy.

Exercise

  • Bring to mind a memory that still makes you cringe.
  • Describe what happened and what you regret about it.
  • Rewind and look through earlier moments in your life until you find the “moment of innocence”.
  • Describe your new perspective.
  • Optional: write a letter to your younger self, expressing your new perspective.
