I Accidentally Discovered a Much Better Way to Communicate

Shane Melaugh · September 12, 2025

A lot of what gets taught as communication skills is really manipulation, and it appeals to one of two deep fears we have. Even if you get good at it, it won’t give you what you actually want. In this video I go through both, and then the third way I’ve been developing. For now I call it integrity-based communication.

In this video

  • The people-pleaser game: charm and charisma advice built on the fear that you’re not good enough as you are.
  • The Machiavellian game: power tactics and “dark psychology”, built on the fear that people can’t be trusted and you’re on your own.
  • Why winning either game still means losing: loneliness behind a performance, or a table full of people you can’t trust.
  • Integrity-based communication puts truth first. It treats both of you as sovereign people with your own needs, preferences and boundaries.
  • A relationship example: he wants the weekend together, she wants time with her friends, and why looking for the truth beats guilt and compromise.
  • A business example: saying yes to everything on a sales call backfires, while being honest about what you deliver keeps good clients around.
  • This takes more presence and awareness than the lower-level games, but the results are better for everyone.
